American Artist: Grafton Tyler Brown
This website documents the history of Grafton Tyler Brown, who is considered to be the first Black American landscape artist. Brown led a prolific career as an artist while passing as white. His art simultaneously exemplifies the settler-colonialist attitudes of his contemporaries, while also posing radical, nearly unparalleled compositional formats, in his later oil paintings. This website provides information on life and artistic career, including a compiled timeline of his oil paintings, and a biographical essay.
